Something very different is happening in Sydney this weekend
There are plenty of Brazilian events where we can get together, hear live music, dance, eat and feel a little closer to home.
This weekend is different.
For the first time in Australia, Brazil of Erased Letters brings together two full days of Brazilian music, cinema, literature, photography, movement, exhibitions, workshops, food and conversations at the Brazilian Cultural Centre in Marrickville.
And entry is free.
It is rare to see a Brazilian cultural programme in Australia reach this far beyond music and nightlife.
Artists, authors, researchers and cultural voices are coming from Brazil to Sydney for a programme exploring Brazilian identity, ancestry, memory and stories that have too often been left outside the version of Brazil we were taught.
One of the major moments of the weekend will be Sérgio Pererê performing in Australia for the first time.
The singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Minas Gerais has spent more than three decades creating music connected to Afro-Brazilian ancestry, oral traditions and cultural memory.
The programme also brings together cinema, literature, capoeira, maracatu, photography, movement and conversations around identity, history and the experiences that continue shaping Brazil today.
And on Sunday from 12pm, the Brazilian Cultural Centre’s regular Brazilian Market becomes part of the programme too, with a special cultural edition serving feijoada, pastel and Brazilian food alongside the performances and activities.
Come for the feijoada. Stay for the experience.
Even if you simply feel like a Brazilian Sunday lunch, you can walk in for the food and find yourself surrounded by maracatu, dance, photography, live performances, conversations and the rest of the programme.
There is a lot happening for Brazilian Independence celebrations this month, and we have plenty of those events further down this newsletter.
But this one is unique.
I genuinely don't know when something of this scale and cultural depth will happen here again.

Brazilian soul and funk are getting their own Soul Train
Okay, this one immediately got my attention.
If names like Tim Maia, Djavan and Jorge Ben Jor already occupy a comfortable corner of your playlists, you probably know Brazil has its own very particular relationship with funk, soul, disco and R&B.
Brazilian artists took influences from Black American music and made them completely their own.
And on 23 October, a new party in Marrickville is going straight into that territory.
Funk Soul Train: Brazilian Spring Edition brings together live music from Ariane de Souza and Between Us, with DJ LeBrown digging into Black soul music from Brazil and around the world.
Think funk, soul, R&B and disco, with retro Soul Train visuals and plenty of room to dance.
Ariane will perform songs released this year as well as a first taste of upcoming Between Us material, joined by Jenny Salles and Lari Kiany on vocals.
