This Sunday: Toca Luiz brings São João to Marrickville

This Sunday, Toca Luiz - Nosso São João takes over the Brazilian Cultural Centre in Marrickville for a full-day celebration inspired by the music, food and traditions of Brazil’s Northeast.

The event is presented by Odara Productions and the Brazilian Cultural Centre, two names that have been helping Brazilian culture grow in Sydney in different but very connected ways.

The celebration is built around the legacy of Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baião, whose accordion, voice and songs helped carry the sounds of the Northeast across Brazil.

Odara and BCC are bringing this to Sydney as the first São João street festival of its kind, and the response has already been strong: more than 1,000 tickets have been sold.

Canguaru is proud to support the event with an exclusive discount for readers, so if this one is on your Festa Junina list, this is a good time to lock it in.

🎶 Brazilian Soundtrack 🎶

The soundtrack for this Brazilian weekend

This week, two music picks help set the mood: one for São João, forró and Festa Junina energy, and another for Brazil’s World Cup moment through Pablo Nacer’s Back in Brazil special.

Playlist #1 – Warm up for Toca Luiz with the official playlist

Odara Productions and the Brazilian Cultural Centre have released the official Toca Luiz playlist on Spotify, with music to bring the soul of São João into the week before Sunday’s event.

The playlist sets the mood with Luiz Gonzaga energy, Northeast Brazil, forró, baião and the sounds that make Festa Junina feel like Festa Junina. Listen now:

Playlist #2 – Back in Brazil starts its World Cup specials

On Tuesday night, our friend Pablo Nacer kicked off the first of four special World Cup editions of Back in Brazil, his weekly Brazilian music show on Radio Northern Beaches.

This first episode connected music to countries from the opening World Cup groups, bringing together songs linked to Brazilian music, the Portuguese language, or the tournament itself.

The episode covered countries from Groups A, B and C, including Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Czech Republic, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland, Brazil, Morocco, Haiti and Scotland.

Next Tuesday, the show moves to Groups D, E and F, including USA, Australia, Turkey, Paraguay, Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Netherlands, Japan, Sweden and Tunisia.

This is why I like Back in Brazil: it is not just a playlist. Pablo brings music with context, research and a sense of story.

For World Cup season, that feels especially right.
