If you are in Sydney tonight and feel like something more underground, more global and more percussive, Re.Sonãncia – 3rd Edition is happening at Deadwax in Enmore.

The event is described as an anthropophagic journey of sound — which feels very Brazilian in the best possible way: absorbing influences, remixing worlds, and turning them into something new.

The night is led by Astronafrica, a Brazilian-born, Sydney-based DJ, selector and cultural curator whose sound moves through Afro-Brazilian grooves, diasporic rhythms, house, jazz, dub, psychedelic textures and tropical bass.

Astronafrica is a cultural connector, building bridges between Brazil, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Sydney’s underground, uniting record digging culture with late-night dance floors.

Divino Samba is back for its 4th edition, bringing one of Sydney’s warmest Brazilian samba gatherings back to Casa do Benfica in Marrickville.

With the motto “Samba nosso de cada dia”, this edition is built around the feeling of a proper roda: friends, sambistas, community, singing together, and that energy that makes a room feel a little closer to Brazil.

Their own words say it best: Divino Samba is a reduto de amigos sambistas — a little piece of Brazil in Sydney.

Expect a vibrant samba circle, familiar faces, Brazilian energy and a beautiful afternoon/evening for people who like samba not only as music, but as celebration.

Brazil playing Japan made me think about one of the most Brazilian things we do: discovering a food from another culture, falling in love with it, and somehow adding our own chaos to it.

For me, Japanese food started with the Brazilian version. That was the first sushi I really knew, and I became a huge fan: hot rolls, cream cheese, different sauces, big combos, creative toppings, and all the things that would probably make a traditional sushi chef raise one eyebrow.

After moving to Australia, I discovered two other versions. One is the Aussie sushi roll: avocado, chicken, quick lunch rolls, shopping-centre sushi, the practical “grab and go” version.

The other is the more traditional Japanese restaurants here, where the focus is much closer to balance, simplicity and the ingredient itself.

Years later, we went to Japan and finally ate Japanese food in its original country, and that changed the way I understood it. The flavours are often more subtle, the presentation is more precise.

That is the part I like most about food: each place teaches you a different version of the same thing. Brazil taught me the fun version, Australia gave me the everyday version, and Japan showed me the original one.

And honestly? All of them have value.

Sometimes you want the traditional Japanese experience. Sometimes you want the Brazilian over-the-top version. Sometimes you just want a salmon avocado roll before a meeting. They are just different cravings, different memories, and different ways of enjoying the same influence.
