Music for Intense Times

Two Back in Brazil programmes for the mind and soul
It's been a pretty intense election season in Brazil, and sometimes we all need a little break from the headlines.
Our suggestion? Start with some childhood nostalgia, then turn up the energy.
1. Back in Brazil #57: Especial Dia das Crianças
Pablo Nacer takes us back to the music of Brazilian childhoods in this Children's Day special.
With Balão Mágico, Trem da Alegria, Os Abelhudos, Xuxa, Gilberto Gil, Raul Seixas, Chico Buarque and Djavan, it's a joyful trip through songs that many of us grew up singing.
A chance to remember simpler days, familiar melodies and the innocence of being a kid in Brazil.
2. Back in Brazil #58: Desesperar, Jamais
Once you've recharged with childhood memories, jump into the latest episode, Desesperar, Jamais.
Featuring Elza Soares, Leci Brandão, Liniker, Caetano Veloso & Maria Bethânia, Alceu Valença, Cidade Negra and Fafá de Belém, this mix moves through MPB, samba, Tropicália and reggae.
The title says it all: Desesperar, jamais. A fitting soundtrack for these times.
Festa pela Democracia

A Brazilian afternoon in the heart of Sydney
This Saturday, Hyde Park will host Festa pela Democracia, an afternoon bringing the Brazilian community together with live music, cultural expression and good company.
The confirmed lineup includes:
Ariane de Souza · Samba de Moça · Taysa Ferreira · Black Paul Band · Vitor Daher, and more.
With Brazilian music at its heart, the event is an opportunity to meet friends, celebrate Brazilian culture and share an afternoon in the city.
When: Saturday 24 October, from 3pm
Where: Hyde Park, Sydney CBD
Entry: Check the organiser's event announcement for details.
