Coxinha VS Meat Pie

50+ places to find coxinha in Australia

Fifteen years ago in Australia, finding coxinha felt a bit like Indiana Jones chasing treasure. You had to know someone, ask around, find a secret contact, hope the order had been placed more than a week in advance.

When Aussies tried to understand this obsession with coxinha, pastel, croquettes, empanadas and all the other savoury little treasures Latin America does so well, the answer was always the same: “Try a meat pie, mate.”

It’s not that meat pies are bad. They’re just not coxinha. Back when we lived in Mosman, the owner of the local Chinese grocery heard me talking about coxinha and handed me a meat pie from the bakery a couple of shops down. He said the baker dropped off a basket full of goodies every morning and he was a bit tired of them. That turned into a strange and lovable routine: my wife and I, still new to Australia, stopping by the grocery shop and the owner pulling out a free meat pie for us from the basket.

To be fair, that homemade Mosman meat pie was actually great. Especially after the mistake of trying Pie Face first. But still, if given the choice, I’d take a good coxinha every time.

The good news is that the coxinha mission is much easier now. Places like Brazilian Flame BBQ have long been serving some of the most generous coxinhas in Sydney, with stores in Zetland, Dee Why and Maroubra.

And at the Brazilian Cultural Centre in Marrickville, the salgadinho game has been strong too. Last time we were there, they had a coxinha de carne seca that was honestly incredible. Now we’re all hoping it makes another appearance tonight, since that’s where we’re heading for Baile do Charme.

After a long Easter weekend of chocolate eggs and sweet overload, coxinha sounds even better.

That’s why I put together a guide with 50+ places to find coxinha across Australia, with spots in NSW, QLD, VIC, WA, SA and more, from restaurants and bakeries to online orders and catering. 😉

🪩 Tonight’s Vibe 🪩

Baile do Charme lands in Marrickville tonight

Straight from the Black music culture of Rio, Baile do Charme brings that smooth mix of soul, R&B, groove and Brazilian swing that turned charme into a real movement, not just a party.

Tonight, that energy lands at the Brazilian Cultural Centre in Marrickville, with production by DaRua Lab and DJ Lebrown, doors from 7:00 PM, a family-friendly setup, and Brazilian food and drinks on site. So if you want a Saturday night with black music, Brazilian flavour and a proper dancefloor vibe, this one looks the part.

What makes charme special is the feeling on the floor. It is not about performing or getting every move right. It is about moving with the music, bringing your own style, connecting with the people around you, and letting the groove lead.

That shared energy is a big part of why charme became so iconic in Rio.

And yes, Canguaru readers get a big discount on this one, which makes tonight even easier to solve. 🕺
